TONY CRAGG - IN 4 D

SOMETHING SOLID OUT OF THE STREAM

Merano, Merano arte February 13 - May 29, 2011

Tony Cragg is one of the most important sculptors of our times.
He made his breakthrough with works made of plastic finds which he connected with natural materials. After a number of important exhibitions, including several Venice Biennials, his working method changed in the mid-eighties. He returned to the origins of sculpture and started working with bronze and wood.

Through his works, Cragg endeavors to break habits of seeing and thinking, eradicate the fundamental difference between mass and lightness, and indicate a continuous metamorphosis.

Born in 1949 in Liverpool. Member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and since 2001 member of Akademie der KĂŒnste. Has been living and working in Wuppertal since 1977. Lecturer at École des Beaux-Arts in Metz in 1976, at Kunstakademie DĂŒsseldorf as of 1979, and at UniversitĂ€t der KĂŒnste Berlin since 2001. Cragg’s works are held in high esteem internationally and are shown in public spaces and exhibitions worldwide. Repeatedly, they have been presented at renowned survey events on the development of contemporary art, e. g. documenta 7 (1982) and 8 (1987) in Kassel and at biennials such as those in Venice (1980, 1986, 1988 UK pavilion), Sao Paulo (1983), and Sydney (1984). He has received several awards, including 1988 Turner Prize (London) and 2002 Piepenbrock-Preis fĂŒr Skulptur (Berlin).
